So you need new windows and you’ve come to see the window installation professionals at WinChoice USA. As the premier window manufacturer, seller, and installer in the Southeastern United States, we are happy that you have chosen to do business with us.
That said, when you come to see us at one of our ten locations we will have one question for you before we even begin to look at our various window options — Are you replacing old windows or looking for windows for new construction?
Believe it or not, most people think that all windows are the same. Sure, it is a piece of glass that draws the line between the indoors and the outdoors, but there are plenty of different window styles, capabilities, and uses that differentiate one window from another.
The Two Main Types of Windows
As we said above, when you stop by one of our showrooms, a member of our team will ask you if you are shopping for replacement windows or windows for new construction. But what makes these two types of windows different? Continue reading to learn more.
New Construction Windows
If you are building a new home or building an addition on your home, new construction windows are the perfect option for you. What sets new construction windows apart from replacement windows is the method in which the window installers will secure the window in place.
Featuring a nail fin frame, a new window is attached directly to the framing of the new home or addition. Because new construction windows are meant to attach directly to the frame, they are almost always installed when the new construction’s frame is fully exposed.
The Exception: While new construction windows are almost always used in new construction and the construction of new home additions, there is one other situation where a new construction window might be recommended by your window installers.
When an existing window on a home is in terrible shape, it almost always means that the materials immediately surrounding the window frame are also in poor condition. If that is the case, your window installers might suggest a new construction window.
When installing a new construction window as a replacement, the contractor will remove all of the damaged materials surrounding the window — exposing the framing of the wall where they will attach the nail fin frame.
Replacement Windows
If you are working on a home improvement project, it is more than likely that a member of our team will recommend that you shop our large selection of replacement windows — with the one exception being if your windows are in poor enough condition that the studs will have to be exposed before replacing them.
If the wall surrounding the window is in good condition, a replacement window is the best, most cost-effective option. Because the wall is in good condition, the window installers do not have to expose the studs and can instead simply remove the interior trim of the existing window and then install the replacement.
